How long do washing machines last?
The typical range
Washing machines commonly remain in service for roughly 10 to 13 years. The honest caveat is that the spread around that is wider than for any other major appliance, and the published figures reflect it.

Why the range is so wide
A five-to-fifteen-year band looks like the source hedging, but it is describing something real. Washing machine wear tracks cycle count far more directly than calendar age, and cycle counts across households differ by a factor of five or more. A single person running two loads a week and a family of six running two loads a day are using the same appliance in ways that have almost nothing in common.
So the useful question is not how old the machine is but roughly how much work it has done. A twelve-year-old machine in a two-person household may be barely mid-life. A six-year-old machine that has run daily since it was installed is not young.
Front loader or top loader changes the answer
The two designs do not fail the same way, and the difference matters for whether a repair is worth it.
Front loaders spin faster, which is why they extract more water and dry faster, and that puts real load on the drum bearing and the suspension. Their characteristic end-of-life failure is a drum bearing, which on many designs cannot be replaced without splitting the outer tub — a job whose labour cost alone can approach the price of a new machine. They also have a door boot, a large flexible seal that is a genuine wear item, and a spider arm behind the drum that can corrode.
Top loaders have no door seal to fail and simpler suspension, but the transmission or drive system and the lid switch are the parts that tend to end them.

What shortens it
Overloading is the factor people underestimate most, because a machine that is overloaded still completes its cycle.
- Cycle count. The dominant factor, and the reason the published range is so wide.
- Overloading. Packing the drum stresses the bearing, the suspension and the motor on every spin, and the machine gives no warning that it is happening.
- Detergent overdosing. Excess detergent leaves residue that feeds mould in the seal and the dispenser, and does nothing for cleaning.
- Levelling. A machine that is not level walks and vibrates, which loads the suspension and bearing far beyond design.
- Leaving the door shut on a front loader. Traps moisture at the boot, which is what produces the smell people associate with front loaders and shortens seal life.
Repair or replace
Pumps, valves, belts, seals and suspension components are worth fixing well into a machine's life — the parts are inexpensive and none of them indicates that the rest of the machine is finished.
The decision point is the bearing on a front loader. If the drum is rumbling and there is play in it, get the repair quoted before assuming either outcome, because the answer depends heavily on the design: some machines take a bearing kit at a sensible cost, and others require splitting a sealed tub and effectively rebuilding the machine. That single question usually decides whether a nine-year-old front loader is worth keeping.
One more consideration specific to this category: a washing machine failure can damage the room it is in. A machine that is leaking, walking across the floor or making bearing noise is not a fault you have the luxury of monitoring for a few months.
Getting more life out of one
Do not overload. Check it is level, and re-check after it has been moved. Use the right amount of detergent rather than more. Leave the door ajar on a front loader between washes. Clean the dispenser and, if it has one, the pump filter. Run an occasional hot maintenance wash to clear residue from the drum and seal.

- Not necessarily, but it needs looking at rather than ignoring. Rumbling with play in the drum suggests a bearing, which is the expensive case. Rumbling without play may be as simple as an object trapped between the drums or worn suspension, both of which are ordinary repairs.

Survey conducted summer 2006, published February 2007, superseding NAHB's 1993 study in Housing Economics.
