Why an appliance serial number may not show the exact age

A vague answer is sometimes the correct answer. Here is exactly why, and what closes the gap.

The code repeats

This is the biggest one. GE's year letter comes round every twelve years. Legacy Maytag's every twenty-four. Whirlpool's every thirty. So a single serial genuinely fits several years, and no amount of cleverness extracts information the code does not contain.

GE's own support documentation says this outright and suggests checking the owner's manual print date to resolve it. When a manufacturer tells you its own code is ambiguous, a decoder claiming otherwise is not being more accurate — it is being less honest.

The decade is not encoded at all

Frigidaire and Electrolux encode the last digit of the year and the production week, but nothing that identifies the decade — not in the serial, and not in the model number either. A year digit of 8 fits 2018, 2008, 1998 and 1988 with nothing to separate them.

The format only ever encoded a month

GE, legacy Maytag and Bosch encode a month, not a week or a day. Any tool telling you a GE appliance was made on 12 March 2014 is inventing the day. The correct answer is March 2014, and that is the limit of what the code supports.

Built is not bought

Even a perfect decode gives the manufacture date, not the purchase or installation date. Appliances sit in distribution, in warehouses and on showroom floors. A gap of a few weeks is normal; a year or more is common for clearance stock and for built-in appliances specified early in a construction project.

The brand did not build the appliance

Kenmore is the clearest case, but not the only one. Plenty of microwaves, dehumidifiers and chest freezers are built by a manufacturer other than the badge on the front, each with its own serial conventions. When the badge and the builder differ, the badge tells you nothing about the format.

What actually narrows it down

Four things, in rough order of usefulness.

When you bought it, and whether it was new or used. This alone usually eliminates every candidate but one.
The print date on the owner's manual, normally near the publication number in a format like 02-20.
The model number, which ties to a specific production era.
The appliance's design and features — control panel style, display type, energy label generation.
