Failing that, look at the rear panel near the top, though that means pulling the machine out.

Whirlpool, Maytag and Amana washers give you the production week, which is the most precise result available from any American brand. Kenmore washers depend entirely on who built them: prefix 110 is Whirlpool, 796 is LG, 592 is Samsung. Without the model number a Kenmore washer serial cannot be decoded at all.

Age matters here because of how washing machines fail. Bearings, the drum spider and the control board are the expensive components, and they tend to go towards the end of a machine's life rather than randomly through it. A bearing failure on a nine-year-old machine is usually the moment to replace rather than repair, because the labour is substantial and other end-of-life components are close behind.

Front loaders and top loaders have meaningfully different failure patterns, but both sit in roughly the same 10 to 13 year typical service range. How heavily the machine is used matters more than which type it is — a machine running fourteen loads a week will not last as long as one running four.
