Report a correction

If we gave you the wrong date and you know the right one, telling us is the single most useful thing you can do for this tool.

For example: week 6 of 2020.

A serial lets us reproduce the exact result, which makes a report much easier to act on. It is stored masked — we keep the first two and last two characters and replace the rest — and it is visible only to administrators. You can submit a useful report without it.

What makes a report actionable

The most useful reports establish the real manufacture date independently of the serial number. In rough order of how much weight we can put on them:

  • Manufacturer confirmation, from their support team or warranty records.
  • An original purchase receipt or invoice with a date.
  • A print date on the owner's manual, usually near the publication number.
  • An installation record from a fitter or builder.
  • Service documentation showing the format we got wrong.

“This seems too old” is worth sending too, but it is much harder to act on. If several reports say the same thing about the same rule, that is a signal in itself.

What we do with it

Reports are reviewed against the documentation behind the rule. If the rule is wrong, we fix it, update the sources and record the revision. If the rule is right but the result was misleading — usually because a caveat was not prominent enough — we improve the wording instead. Either way the change is visible on the methodology and sources pages.

Privacy

Serial numbers are masked before storage, reports are visible only to administrators, and an email address is used solely to follow up on your report. Reports are deleted within 24 months of being resolved.
