Why this exists

Most people need to date an appliance at an inconvenient moment: a repair quote has arrived, a house has been bought with the appliances included, or an insurer wants to know how old something is. The information is encoded on the appliance itself, but the encoding is different for every manufacturer and largely undocumented in one place.

There are already tools that will decode a serial number. The problem with most of them is that they always return an answer. Several manufacturer date codes genuinely repeat every twelve, twenty-four or thirty years, and at least two do not encode the decade at all. A tool that gives you a single confident year from a Frigidaire serial is not being more accurate than one that gives you four — it is concealing the ambiguity.

What we do differently

• Every rule cites its sources, and those sources are listed publicly with the date each was last checked.
• Where a code fits several years, all of them are shown, ranked, with an explanation of what would narrow it down.
• Where nothing fits, the tool says so and explains the likely reason rather than forcing the serial through the nearest available rule.
• Precision is never overstated. A format that encodes a month never produces a claim about a day.
• Brands we cannot source are listed as unsupported rather than quietly guessed at.

Coverage

13 decoder rules across 10 brand families, focused on the United States, where manufacturer serial systems are best documented. The data model is built to take other regions and formats, and the architecture supports adding a manufacturer without touching anything else.

Independence

Appliance Age Finder is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by any appliance manufacturer. Brand names are used only to identify the products the tool can decode.

The site currently carries no advertising, no affiliate links and no sponsored placements. If that changes, disclosures will appear on the affected pages, and the ranking of results will not change as a consequence — the decoder does not know or care whether anything is monetised.

Privacy, briefly

Decoding runs in your browser. Serial numbers are never sent to our servers, never placed in a URL, never included in analytics, and not stored. This is a design decision rather than a policy promise: the code that would send a serial number anywhere does not exist.

What we get wrong

Decade selection is the weakest part of the tool. Where a code repeats, we rank the most recent reading first, which is a heuristic rather than evidence. Format variants that the public documentation does not describe will return no match at all. And any serial can be transcribed wrongly, which is why we flag ambiguous characters instead of guessing.
