Appliance Age Finder

Appliance age finder

Enter what is on the data plate and we will estimate when the appliance was built, show how we worked it out, and be explicit about what the serial number cannot tell you.

Required. Only brands we can cite a source for are listed.

Optional, but it lets us rule out formats that do not apply.

Optional for most brands, required for Kenmore.

Required. Stays in your browser — we never send it anywhere.

What this tool does

Appliance manufacturers encode a build date into the serial number. The encoding is different for every brand family and has changed over time, so the practical problem is not arithmetic — it is knowing which system applies to your appliance, and being honest about how precise the answer can be.

We hold a rule for each documented format, each one carrying its sources, its production era, its known exceptions and its test cases. When you run a lookup, every rule that could apply is tried, impossible values are rejected, and each surviving reading is scored and shown in order with the reasoning attached.

What it deliberately does not do

It does not invent a day when the format only encodes a month. It does not pick one year when four fit. It does not substitute a character it is unsure about. And it does not cover manufacturers whose formats we have not been able to source, however much that would widen the apparent coverage.

Common questions

How accurate is an appliance age finder?
It depends entirely on the manufacturer's format. Whirlpool and Frigidaire encode the production week, so the build date is accurate to a few days. GE and Bosch encode the month. What no serial number can tell you is the sale or installation date, which is typically weeks to months later, or occasionally more than a year.
Can I find the age without the serial number?
Rarely. The model number identifies a production era, which gives a rough window, but the serial is what carries the date. If the label is missing or illegible, the manufacturer can usually confirm the build date from their own records if you can supply the model number.
Does appliance age tell me when it will fail?
No. Age tells you where an appliance sits relative to how long units of that type typically stay in service. It is one input into a repair decision, alongside the repair quote, parts availability, running cost and repair history — and it is not the most important one.
Why should I trust this over other appliance age finders?
Because every rule cites its source, every rule has test cases covering invalid and ambiguous inputs, and the tool returns nothing when nothing fits rather than producing a plausible-looking guess. Where a code genuinely fits several years, you get all of them and an explanation of what would narrow it.
