How KitchenAid serial numbers work

Same structure as Whirlpool: division letter, year character, two-digit week, build sequence. The year character repeats on a thirty-year cycle.

KitchenAid became part of Whirlpool Corporation in 1986, which means essentially every KitchenAid major appliance still in service uses the Whirlpool serial system. The structure is the same throughout: a division letter, a year character, two digits for the production week, then a build sequence.

Built-in KitchenAid products are worth a note. Wall ovens, built-in refrigerators and cooktops are frequently produced in plants shared with other Whirlpool brands, so the division letter tells you nothing KitchenAid-specific. It identifies a manufacturing division, not a KitchenAid factory, and we do not translate it into a place name.

The label is often harder to reach on a KitchenAid than on a freestanding appliance. On built-in refrigerators it is usually on the upper interior side wall or behind the top grille. On cooktops it is on the underside, which in practice means looking up at it from inside the cabinet below. On wall ovens, open the door and check the frame around the opening.

As with every Whirlpool-system brand, the year character repeats on a thirty-year cycle. A KitchenAid dishwasher with a year code of D fits 1994 and 2024 equally well on the serial alone. Supplying the model number or a purchase year is what resolves it.

Where to find the label on a KitchenAid appliance

  • Built-in refrigerators: on the upper interior side wall, or behind the top grille.
  • Dishwashers: on the door edge with the door open.
  • Wall ovens: on the frame inside the door opening, or on the side of the cabinet cut-out.
  • Cooktops: on the underside, which usually means looking up from inside the cabinet.

Production-period caveats

  • KitchenAid has been part of Whirlpool since 1986, so this format covers essentially every KitchenAid major appliance still in service.
  • KitchenAid stand mixers and other countertop products use different codes that we do not decode.
  • Built-in KitchenAid products are made in plants shared with other Whirlpool brands, so the division letter is not KitchenAid-specific.

Why a lookup commonly fails

  • A stand mixer serial was entered. Those are a different system entirely.
  • The serial was taken from the packaging rather than the appliance.

KitchenAid serial number questions

Where is the serial number on a built-in KitchenAid refrigerator?
Usually on the upper interior side wall of the fresh-food compartment, or behind the top grille. On some models it is on a plate visible only once the top grille is removed, which is a two-screw job — check the interior wall first.
Can I use this for a KitchenAid stand mixer?
No. Stand mixers and other countertop appliances use a different serial convention. We only decode KitchenAid major appliances, and returning a made-up answer for a mixer would be worse than returning nothing.
Does a KitchenAid dishwasher last longer than a cheaper brand?
Dishwashers of all brands typically stay in service around 9 to 12 years. Build quality affects where in that range a particular unit lands, along with water hardness, how heavily it is loaded and whether the filter is cleaned. The serial number tells you the age; it cannot tell you the condition.
