Washing machines typically stay in service around 10 to 13 years. Fifteen is beyond that, which does not mean the machine is finished — it means several components are simultaneously near the end of their expected life, so fixing one does not buy as much time as it would on a younger machine.

These are cheap, quick, and do not signal wider wear.
- Door seal or boot: a common wear item, inexpensive, and unrelated to the machine's overall condition.
- Drain pump: frequently blocked rather than failed, and cheap to replace.
- Inlet valve or hoses: low cost, straightforward.
- Door lock or interlock switch: a common failure and an inexpensive part.
- Drive belt on a belt-driven machine: cheap and quick.
Faults that usually mean replacement at this age
These are expensive, labour-heavy, or indicate the machine is genuinely worn out.
- Drum bearings: the repair is labour-intensive and on many modern machines the drum is sealed, making it uneconomic at any age past about eight years.
- Drum spider corrosion: usually terminal.
- Main control board: often a large fraction of a replacement machine's cost.
- Motor failure on a direct-drive machine: expensive, and rare enough that it usually accompanies other wear.
- A leaking outer tub or a cracked casing: not worth repairing.
A practical test
Get the quote first, then apply two checks. If the repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new machine, replacement usually wins at this age. And if this is the third significant repair in two years, you are maintaining a machine that is telling you something.
One more factor people forget: parts availability. Manufacturers stock functional parts for a limited period after a model ends production. On a fifteen-year-old machine, a cheap repair today may become impossible in two years, which is worth knowing before investing in it.
