How long do refrigerators last?

Usually 10 to 15 years — but the ice maker and the dispenser will often fail long before the part that actually does the cooling.

The typical range

Refrigerators commonly remain in service for roughly 10 to 15 years, which puts them among the longer-lived kitchen appliances. Chest and upright freezers tend to run longer still.

The useful thing to understand about a refrigerator is that it is really two machines in one cabinet, and they age at very different rates. The sealed cooling system — compressor, condenser, evaporator — is simple, hermetically closed, and often still working perfectly at twenty years. Everything bolted around it is not: the ice maker, the through-door dispenser, the control board, the fans and the defrost components are ordinary mechanical and electronic parts with ordinary lifespans.

That split explains most of the frustration people have with this category. A refrigerator that is still cold but whose ice maker died at year eight has not failed. It has lost a convenience feature, and the question is only whether that feature is worth what it costs to restore.

What the published figures say

The two standard references land slightly lower than the range this site uses, and the gap is worth explaining rather than hiding.

Why those numbers differ

A survey of when appliances were replaced and an estimate of how long they remain serviceable are not the same measurement. People replace refrigerators for reasons that have nothing to do with failure — a kitchen refit, a house move, a door that opens the wrong way in the new place, or simply wanting a different configuration. Those replacements pull a survey average down without telling you anything about how long the appliance would have lasted.

The NAHB figure also predates the widespread move to electronic control boards and through-door dispensers, which added components that fail earlier than anything on a 1990s refrigerator. Whether that makes modern units shorter-lived overall is genuinely contested, and this site does not claim to settle it.

Failures cluster. Knowing which cluster you are in tells you most of what you need about whether to repair.

What shortens it

Most of the spread comes down to airflow and heat. A refrigerator's job is moving heat out of the cabinet, and anything that makes that harder shortens the compressor's life.

  • Dust on the condenser coils. The single most neglected piece of maintenance on the appliance. Coils packed with dust and pet hair force the compressor to run longer and hotter for the same result.
  • Poor clearance. A unit pushed tight into a cabinet with no room to exhaust heat at the back or top runs hotter for its whole life.
  • A failing door seal. Warm humid air leaking in means more run time, more defrost cycles and more ice.
  • Ambient temperature. A refrigerator in an unconditioned garage in a hot climate is working far outside what it was designed around.
  • Power quality. Repeated brownouts and surges are hard on compressors and control boards alike.

Repair or replace

The line is unusually clear with refrigerators, because one failure category behaves differently from all the others.

Anything outside the sealed system — gaskets, fans, defrost components, thermostats, ice makers, boards — is a normal repair, and worth doing whenever the part cost is a modest fraction of a replacement. Refrigerators are expensive to replace, which pushes the balance towards repair further into their life than it would for a dishwasher.

Anything inside the sealed system is different. Compressor replacement and refrigerant leak repair need certified work, and the cost lands close enough to the price of a new unit that it is rarely the better choice on a machine over ten years old. It is not that the repair is impossible; it is that you would be spending most of the cost of a new refrigerator to keep the oldest remaining parts.

One practical note: measure the space before deciding. Cabinet openings built around a refrigerator from fifteen years ago do not always accommodate current models, and discovering that after the old one has gone is an expensive surprise.

Getting more life out of one

Vacuum the condenser coils twice a year — behind the kick plate at the front on most modern units, or at the back on older ones. Leave clearance for the heat to escape. Check the door seal by closing it on a sheet of paper and seeing whether it pulls out easily. Keep it reasonably full but not packed, so air can circulate. None of this is dramatic, and all of it is the difference between the bottom and the top of the range.

Common questions

Is a 15-year-old refrigerator worth repairing?
It depends entirely on what failed. A gasket, fan, thermostat or defrost component is worth fixing at fifteen years — the parts are inexpensive and the rest of the machine may have years left. A compressor or a refrigerant leak at fifteen years usually is not, because certified sealed-system work costs enough that you would be paying most of a new refrigerator to keep the oldest parts.
My refrigerator is cold but the ice maker has stopped. Is it dying?
No. The ice maker is one of the shortest-lived components in the cabinet and it fails independently of the cooling system. A refrigerator that still holds temperature has not failed; it has lost a convenience feature. Repair it if the fix is worth the feature to you.
Do modern refrigerators last less time than old ones?
It is genuinely contested. Modern units are far more efficient and have more electronic components, and those components fail sooner than anything on a simpler older machine. Whether that makes the appliance shorter-lived overall depends on how you count a unit that still cools perfectly but has a dead control board. This site does not claim to settle it.
How do I find out how old mine is?
The serial number on the data plate — usually inside the fresh-food compartment on the left wall or near the ceiling. Enter it in the lookup. For some brands the code gives the week; for Frigidaire and Electrolux the decade is not encoded at all, so you will get several candidate years rather than one.
