How long do ovens last?

Usually 13 to 15 years, and often longer — ovens outlast almost everything else in the kitchen because there is so little in them that moves.

The typical range

Ovens and ranges commonly remain in service for roughly 13 to 15 years, and it is not unusual to find one working well past twenty. They are the longest-lived major kitchen appliance, and the reason is mechanical simplicity: an oven is an insulated box, a heat source and a thermostat. There is no pump, no drum, no compressor, and very little that runs.

Why gas tends to last longer

A gas burner is a valve, a tube and an igniter. An electric element is a resistance heater that expands and contracts every time it cycles, and eventually fails at a weak point. Thermal cycling is what wears out electric heating elements, and gas burners simply do not have that component.

The trade is that gas has an igniter, which is a genuine wear item and the single most common gas oven fault. A weak igniter that no longer draws enough current to open the gas valve produces the classic symptom: the oven clicks or glows but never lights, or takes a very long time to reach temperature.

Electric ranges with a glass ceramic top add a failure mode gas does not have — the top itself can crack, and on many models that is not economically repairable.

Almost everything on this list is a wear item worth replacing, which is why ovens stay in service so long.

What shortens it

Ovens are hard to wear out, and two of the four items here are self-inflicted.

  • Heavy self-clean use. The self-clean cycle runs the cavity far hotter than normal cooking, and it is hard on elements, door seals, thermostats and control boards. Occasional use is fine; running it monthly is a way of ageing the oven faster.
  • Spills left to bake on. Acidic and sugary spills attack the enamel and, at the cavity floor, eventually the metal beneath it.
  • Door misalignment. A door that no longer seals means longer heating, more cycling and more wear on everything that cycles.
  • Cleaning products on the wrong surfaces. Abrasives on a glass top and oven cleaner on a self-clean cavity liner both cause damage that is not repairable.

Repair or replace

Ovens lean strongly towards repair, and for longer than any other appliance in the kitchen. Elements, igniters, sensors, switches, hinges and seals are all ordinary parts, and none of them indicates the appliance is finished. A twenty-year-old oven with a failed element is worth fixing.

Three situations change that. A control board on an old range can cost enough to be a genuine decision. A cracked glass cooktop is often uneconomic. And a cavity that has corroded through, or insulation that has broken down so the oven cannot hold temperature, is the end — those are the parts you cannot sensibly replace.

For built-in wall ovens there is a further practical point: cabinet openings and electrical provision were built around a specific unit, and current models do not always drop into an old aperture. Check dimensions before committing to replacement, because the cabinetry work can cost more than the difference between repairing and replacing.

Getting more life out of one

Use the self-clean cycle sparingly and wipe spills before they bake on. Check the door closes square against its seal and have the hinges seen to if it does not. If baking has become uneven or the oven seems to run hot, have the temperature sensor checked before concluding the oven is worn out — that is a cheap part and a common cause. Keep abrasives off a glass top.

Common questions

Is a 20-year-old oven worth repairing?
Often, yes. Ovens have very little that wears, and the common faults — elements, igniters, temperature sensors, hinges, seals — are inexpensive standard parts. A twenty-year-old oven with a failed element is a straightforward repair. The exceptions are a costly control board, a cracked glass cooktop, or a corroded cavity.
My oven does not hold the right temperature. Is it finished?
Usually not. The most common causes are a failed temperature sensor or thermostat and a door that no longer seals, both of which are cheap to put right. Insulation breakdown, which genuinely does end an oven, is much rarer and normally comes with other signs of age.
Do gas ovens last longer than electric ones?
The published figures suggest so — InterNACHI puts gas ranges at 15 to 17 years against 13 to 15 for electric. The likely reason is that electric heating elements fail from thermal cycling and gas burners have no equivalent part. Gas has its own wear item in the igniter, but that is cheap to replace.
Does the self-clean cycle damage the oven?
Used occasionally, no. Used frequently, it is one of the few things that measurably shortens an oven's life: the cycle runs far hotter than cooking and stresses elements, seals, thermostats and control boards. Wiping spills as they happen is gentler on the appliance than relying on the cycle.
