How old is my oven or range?

Ovens and ranges are among the longest-lived appliances in the kitchen, and their labels are among the most awkward to reach.

On a freestanding range, the label is usually behind the bottom storage drawer or the kick plate — pull the drawer all the way out and look at the frame behind it. Alternatively, open the oven door and check the frame around the opening, particularly the left-hand side. On a wall oven, open the door and look at the frame, or at the side of the cabinet cut-out.

Ranges and ovens typically stay in service 13 to 16 years, longer than most other appliances. They are mechanically simple, and the components that fail — elements, igniters, thermostats, door hinges — are generally replaceable without touching anything structural. That pushes the repair-versus-replace balance towards repair for longer than with laundry or dishwashing appliances.

Gas models change the picture. A gas range involves a live gas supply, and any work on the supply, the burners or the safety valve belongs to a qualified professional. The same applies to the igniter circuit on many models. Reading the data plate is perfectly safe; going further is not.

Electric ovens are wired into a high-current circuit — typically 40 or 50 amps in North America. That is not a circuit to work on casually. Isolate at the consumer unit before any inspection, and use an electrician for anything involving the supply.

Where to find the label on a oven

Work through these in order — the first two cover the large majority of models.

Ovens commonly remain in service for roughly 13 to 16 years. Maintenance, how hard it is used, water quality and build quality all move that figure considerably in both directions.

This is a typical range, not a prediction. Plenty of appliances run well past it, and a small number fail early. Nothing here says your appliance is about to break.

Date-code limitations for this category

  • GE and Hotpoint ranges reuse the year letter every twelve years, and ranges last long enough that the older candidates are genuinely plausible.
  • Frigidaire ranges do not encode the decade — the product letter F confirms it is a range.
  • Legacy Maytag ranges give a month but no production week.
  • Wall ovens are frequently installed well after their build date, particularly in new-build properties.
